Noblewoman’s Ceremonial Overskirt
Shoowa People, DR Congo
Mid 20th century
Raffia, palm fiber, stem stitch and cut pile embroidery
42.5 x 2 ins. (108 x 51 cm)

An unusual overskirt in that it is made of two very different pattern Shoowa panels, as opposed to an integrated design. The upper one with a "distorted field" pattern appears to be earlier. The bottom panel could date to the 1960s or 70s. These textiles were worn over the very long embroidered or appliqué dance skirts used by women. This piece has not been mounted. It can be displayed as is using a velcro strip on back or we can arrange for professional mounting service at cost.
