Early 20th century
Sewn coiling technique, natural fibers and dye
9" high x 4.5" diameter (23 x 11.5 cm)
This is a very fine and rare example of a double layer basket; an earlier basket is fully encased within the outer layer. Possibly a way to protect and honor a family heirloom. The use of a 'salt and pepper' effect rather than a solid black for the black patterns is also an unusual feature.
